What is a chiropractor?

When someone says the word “chiropractor”, what comes to mind? Most people say back pain and/or joint ‘cracking’. Chiropractors are primary health care providers. Anyone can stroll into a chiropractic office and start receiving care, without a prescription from a physician. Chiropractors are doctors who provide hands-on therapy, which is also known as manual therapy. They use manual therapy to treat most aches and pains in the body through release of muscles, and possibly manipulations/adjustments of the joints. Chiropractors have undergone many years of education which allow them to become experts in the musculoskeletal system. They can treat muscle, ligament, tendon, joint, and nerve pain. If a joint moves, a chiropractor can treat it. This means they can treat your feet, your jaw, your neck, and anything in between. Chiropractors are most known for their expertise in treating back and neck pain. They are also very skilled in treating your extremities too. This may include shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles.

What is a physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists are also manual therapists that provide hands-on care for your pain. A physiotherapist’s expertise lies in their ability to provide their patients with effective rehabilitation to help manage their condition. They will provide you with a rehabilitation program that is tailored to your condition in conjunction with soft tissue therapy and rehab machines. The goal of physiotherapy is to strengthen your muscles and joints so that you feel less discomfort when you are doing your daily activities.

What are the benefits of manual therapy?

Chiropractors and physiotherapists can perform a variety of manual techniques which will:

  • decrease your pain

  • increase your functional abilities

  • increase your range of motion

The goal of care is to get you feeling better faster. That way you can get back to doing what makes you happy, and doing it pain-free.

Is manual therapy right for me?

When you walk into a chiropractic or physiotherapist office, your practitioner will conduct a thorough assessment which will include a history and physical exam. The provider will provide you a diagnosis for your condition and will give you the tools to make you feel better. This will include a unique treatment plan that is personalized to your needs. If you’ve had pain that’s been bugging you for a week, a month, or maybe even years, chiropractic care and physiotherapy may be the right way to go.
