Acupuncture in Scarborough

Acupuncture involves very thin needles being inserted into the skin at specific points. Acupuncture can be used to bring blood flow to the area of injury to relax tight muscles, or to stimulate inhibited muscles. A contemporary medical approach may be used that involves electroacupuncture. All of our chiropractors and physiotherapists practice using acupuncture to enhance their practice style.

What To Expect At Your Acupuncture Appointment

Depending on your diagnosis and comfort level, acupuncture may or may not be recommended. The number of needles and size of needles would depend on your condition and the area of the body. The acupuncture provider will ensure the area is clean and a new needle is used for each point. You will feel a small pinch as the needle is inserted, but after the initial pinch, there should not be any pain. If electroacupuncture is necessary, small clips are attached to the ends of the needles and the stimulation unit will be turned on. A typical acupuncture treatment lasts between 15-20 minutes.

  • What is a chiropractic adjustment? Do I have to do it?
An adjustment is a highly skilled and precise movement usually applied by hand to a joint of the body. Adjustments free up the joint to restore proper movement and optimize function. They are quick movements that sometimes cause a 'popping' or 'cracking' sound called a cavitation. The sound is simply gas being released from the joint, just like opening a can of pop. Chiropractic adjustments have extensive research. Complications are rare and side-effects, such as temporary soreness, are usually minor. Your chiropractor will determine if your problem will respond to chiropractic care or if you require referral to another health care provider. If you are not comfortable with adjustments, there are plenty of other types of treatments that your chiropractor can do.
